Our CFO, Sabrina Simmons, on ‘Women in Leadership’

In honor of Women’s History Month and a new “Women in Leadership” employee resource group at Gap Inc., we asked our CFO, Sabrina Simmons, a few questions. Here’s what she had to say:

 1. You recently announced that you are the executive sponsor of a new employee resource group, GapWIL (Women in Leadership). In a company that employs more than 70 percent women, why do you think this group is necessary?

I have enormous passion for supporting the careers of women.  Though it’s wonderful to see the progress women have made in terms of participation in the workforce, we are still vastly underrepresented in critical leadership positions. I firmly believe more equal representation of women in positions of leadership will improve economic results for our communities and the companies in which we work.

2. Where did you see yourself ending up in your career when you first started out? Did you always know you wanted to be a leader?

Though I didn’t have a specific goal in terms of position or title, I’ve always been very driven. What makes work fun and satisfying for me is to really make an impact. Being in positions of leadership allows for a higher level of influence and contribution, which is something I was drawn toward.

3. What is one piece of advice you could give women who are trying to advance in their careers?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Accept that you can’t have perfection in every aspect of your life. Stay focused on the things that are most critical and get them done superbly.
