Gap’s First Stand-Alone Store in Mexico

It used to be that if you wanted Gap clothes in Mexico, you went to one of 40 Liverpool Department stores and shop at a kiosk — basically a store within a store — which meant you wouldn’t get the full, in-store Gap experience.

But on Saturday, that all changed when we opened our first stand-alone Gap store in the country — at 10,000 square feet— in the new Interlomas Mall just outside of Mexico City. The opening was a hit; already, there are almost 5,000 fans on the Gap Mexico Facebook page.

It’s all part of our plans to grow in the ever-expanding Latin American retail markets (Chile and Panama so far), bringing American style to consumers around the world. There are plans for three more stores in Mexico this year alone, while keeping the Liverpool partnership alive.

On Friday night, bloggers, celebrities and other VIPs converged on the store to celebrate the opening, and to rock out to the Grammy-nominated band Reik (members were decked out in Gap clothes, of course). After the acoustic set, attendees picked up some fall items — including some items made specifically for the Mexico store.

Next up: Gap will open two stores in Colombia — in Bogota and Medellin — in October (along with a Banana Republic store in Medellin in November).

That’s in addition to Gap’s first-ever store in Uruguay later this year.
